Application #10

Authentic Passing Siding

Description:

Two trains run around the layout in a very realistic manner.

One of the trains will wait at the siding until the other train passes by. After that train has traveled some distance, the stopped train will slowly accelerate and follow the first train. The first train will then enter the siding and be passed.

This track configuration allows two trains to be run in a very realistic manner. Each of the trains will gracefully slow-down and pause. Both trains will be running at the same time for some duration, depending upon the size of the layout. Your actual track layout can be as big as you like. We have only shown the most basic layout.

For swtich control, the YardMaster puts out a 1 second "burst" to the electric turnout when triggered by a train sensor. This means that it is impossible to overheat or damage electric turnouts. For switching reliablity pure DC voltage drives the switch instead of a half-wave rectified AC voltage. This gives MUCH more power to the turnout and eliminates the need for "boosters" or amplifiers to drive the switch. Both turnouts can be wired in parallel and powered if desired, or the second turnout can "float" and be pushed by the train as it exits the upper siding.

For a very interesting effect, one train can be very long... too long for the siding. The long train never stops, but always passes by the shorter train. This is done by removing the magnet from the long train so that it does not decelerate and stop. When the magnet is re-attached, the trains will go back to doing their "leap frog" passing siding.
